Volunteer

Four steps to becoming a school volunteer.

The process has a few moving parts, so we've laid it out in order with the emails and links you need. Save this page and come back as each step finishes.

Volunteer screening requirements and procedures may change. Please confirm current requirements with the school if your circumstances differ from those described here.

  1. Step 1

Ask Ms. Haelzle for your volunteer letter

Email Ms. Haelzle to request a volunteer letter. You'll need it to apply for your Vulnerable Sector Check — and it's what gets the $13 Barrie Police fee waived.

We've written the email for you — just add your name and hit send.

Button not opening your email? Send it toshaelzle@scdsb.on.ca

↓ Once you receive the letter

  2. Step 2

    Apply for your police check

Register for an account with Barrie Police and apply for a Vulnerable Sector Check, using your school letter.

Include your letter from the school with your application — that's what gets the $13 Barrie Police fee waived. Without the letter, the fee applies.

↓ Once your police clearance arrives

  3. Step 3

    Create your board volunteer account

Sign in or create an account in SCDSB Community Apps, choose Johnson Street PS as your school, and complete the short accessibility training.

This is the board's record of you as a volunteer — your police clearance itself goes to the school office in step 4.

  4. Step 4

Drop your police clearance at the school office

Bring the paper copy of your completed Vulnerable Sector Check to the school office so the school knows you're cleared to volunteer.

The office is at 105 Johnson St., Barrie, ON L4M 4R4. If you can't drop by, call 705-728-9251 and they'll tell you what works.

That's it — you're ready to help!

Once the school confirms, you can say yes to field trips, classroom help, events and more.
